We’ve all heard about Australia’s millions of dollars in unclaimed superannuation money. Recent estimates suggest the total pot amounts to $2,500 for every Aussie.
As a nation, we’re often guilty of neglecting our superannuation. It feels such a long way off, so it’s easy to kick into the long grass. But like the advert says, super is real money and it’s yours (many people think it’s the governments). To help put that $2,500 in everyday terms, check out these exciting examples of what that money could buy…
1. Travel like a boss
You can’t quite get around the world (at least, not in style) for $2,500, but you could do Sydney to LA for two in economy or upgrade to business and swim with the turtles in Hawaii. For something a little more offbeat, $2,500 would get you a seat on a New Year’s Eve return flight departing from Sydney or Melbourne that offers stunning aerial views of Antarctica.
If Malaysia takes your fancy, $2,500 could get you a night in the Presidential Suite at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Kuala Lumpur, which includes a private dining room for up to 12 guests.
2. Dress like a star
Everyone needs a bit of bling and a luxury watch is something you can keep for years. $2,500 would stretch to most of the big, iconic brands, including Tag Heuer, Breitling and Omega. 3. Eat like a king
There are plenty of places to enjoy a luxury meal with a luxury price tag, but how about chomping into the world’s most expensive bagel? Chefs at the Westin Hotel in New York City’s Times Square will knock you up a lunchtime snack fit for a king, topped with white truffle cream cheese, for just $1,000.
4. Buy a farm
While there are loads of indulgent ways to blow $2,500, you could decide to do some good with it instead. You could make a sizeable donation to your favourite charity or you could buy a farm. Not literally, but a farm of animals for a community in a developing country. $2,500 would buy six rabbits, piglets, goats, chickens, ducks, lambs and cows through the charity CAREgifts.
