Whether the little tot is due to arrive via the cabbage patch, the stork, the mailbox or straight from mummy’s tummy, a baby on the way is easily one of the most exciting times in a parent’s (new or seasoned) life.
And that, of course, calls for a celebration.
Baby showers should be fun for the mum-to-be and the collective friends and family as well, so here are just a few funky baby shower ideas to help you all get ready for a new tiny human in your lives!
Baby shower idea 1: The price is right!
The TV show version may be relegated to off-work-with-the-flu daytime entertainment, but the baby shower version is much more exciting.
Arrange a table of baby items – ie a pack of nappies, a bib, a rattle, a jar of baby food and a soft toy. Keep the receipts so you know exactly how much each item cost, and have each party guest guess how much each item is worth. The closest to the exact number – without going over the price – wins.
Baby shower idea 2: Guess the food
Some babies – and some grown ups too, for that matter – can be very fussy about their meals. What better way to taste test baby food than for grown ups to give it a go?
Either remove the labels from a range of baby foods or put them into fresh bowls. Have your guests taste test each one and try to guess which flavours they are. Whoever guesses correctly (or closest to anyway), wins a prize!
Pro tip: Remember to make the prize something a little more grown up, perhaps a wine bottle (without the label for extra laughs!).
Baby shower idea 3: Decorate a block
Once baby arrives, he or she will need toys, and lots of them.
Find a set of blank wooden building blocks and some heavy duty felt-tip pens – local baby or craft stores should do the trick. Give each guest a block and let them design it. On one side they should write their name, on another perhaps a short note, and on the rest it can be anything they like. Rainbows, kittens, castles, stars or even just smiley faces for the less artistically able.
By the end of the day you’ll have a gorgeous personal set of durable building blocks for the little one to play with in the years to come.
Baby shower idea 4: A baby of any other name…
Remember that exceptionally cute/awkward/hilarious baby photo of yours? It’s time to bring it out again.
Have each guest provide you with a copy of one of their own baby photos prior to the party. Arrange them all together on a table with a number, then have each guest try to match the photo with the grown up version in the room. This is a great way to get everyone mingling if you have members from opposite sides of the family or friends who don’t see each other very often.
If your group doesn’t know each other well, you may need them to wear name badges to help everyone out with this game, but ask them to write it on a sticker with their left hand so it looks like child’s writing!
