Put aside all of our differences, there's a few things many of us have in common. We hate taxes, getting struck down by colds, and can't help but wonder exactly what we'd do if we actually ever won 'the big prize'.
Virgin Money's Super Cars & Super Stars campaign recently put this question to its customers. New and existing superannuation members were all given an equal shot at winning one of three red hot, VIP travel experiences. Prizes included a red carpet Hollywood movie premiere, a trip to the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix and a music gig in the city of the winner's choosing – for two people. In true Virgin style, each prize brimming with rockstar-esque treatment – limo transfers, personal concierge, backstage parties, pit lane passes, VIP packs and dinners in high-end, celebrity-frequented restaurants.
In February, Virgin Money customer David from Melbourne Australia received the call many of us dream of. Like any major prize winner, David took some time to accept that the call from Brian Bissaker, Virgin Money's CEO, was legit.
"I thought it must have been a prank", he explained. "It was all a bit surreal, and only after Brian's call that the reality of my luckiness set in."
So how did David choose?
"Music has always been a massive part of my life" David says, "which made the choice straight forward. It's such a huge opportunity and with so many bands touring all around the globe, the world is truly my oyster with the music prize."
Virgin Money's campaign brought some rare imagination and creativity to a category often aptly described as complex and boring. Super Stars & Super Cars gave Virgin Money's customers a fun and engaging reason to think about their retirement savings.
Brian was also a big fan of the competition.
"What I loved about this campaign was that it didn't matter if you were an existing or new customer, we treated you the same. So many offers in financial services reward only new customers… but our existing customers are just as important to us, if not more," he explained. "We were delighted that David, who's been a customer for a couple of years and was referred to us by a friend, won the prize."
David agrees. "I didn't even realise I'd been entered into the competition. Just for being a customer!" he said.
He's heading to Creamfields, Buenos Aires, in November – one of the world's most famous music festivals. Part of the appeal is the chance to visit South America (one of his ultimate bucket-list destinations) and party with some of the biggest music stars on the planet. Virgin Money will ensure he gets rockstar treatment and follow his adventures through social media.
David's next big decision? Who to take with him. No doubt they're queuing at the door.
