How to add a policy

Simply pick up the phone and call 1800 724 678 to add a policy to your Virgin Car Insurance. That’s all there is to it - no huge forms to fill in, no legalese to decipher. Simply have the vehicle and driver details at hand when you call.

If it’s been a while since you checked us out in any great detail, remember that Virgin Car Insurance policies include a great range of options and extras to choose from to better suit your individual needs.


How to update a policy

Simply pick up the phone and dial 1800 724 678 to update your Virgin Car Insurance policy or your details. There are no forms to fill in, nothing to sign.

Change of address
We need to know:

  • House/unit number, street name and postcode.
  • How the car will be parked.
  • Updated phone contact details (if relevant).

Add (or remove) a driver
We need to know:

  • The name, age and driving history of any added driver.

Modifications and accessories
We need to know:

  • What the accessory or modification is.
  • How much it cost.

Usage and Ownership

  • If the ownership of the vehicle or the purpose for which it is used changes please advise us.

Change bank account details
Credit card payments:

  • Card number and expiry date.
  • Note that we only accept Visa and Mastercard.

Direct debit payments:

  • Your six-digit BSB and account number.
  • Proof of authority if the account is in a business name.

 Please note: It's really important that we know about any changes to your circumstances (as shown above) as soon as they happen. If you don't tell us about these changes, you may risk your policy being cancelled or any claims being rejected.

Comprehensive car insurance With Virgin Car Insurance Comprehensive cover you’re fully protected against all manner of accidents, whether you or someone else is at fault. Your car is also protected should someone steal it, vandalise it, set it alight or breaks in.

Duty of disclosure

What you must tell us:

  • When you take out this insurance for the first time - you must be honest when answering our questions and tell us anything known to you and which a reasonable person in the circumstances would include in answer to the question.
  • When you renew, extend, vary or reinstate your insurance - you must disclose every matter that you know or could reasonably be expected to know, is relevant to us in deciding whether to insure you. You are not required to disclose anything that diminishes the risk to us as the insurer, that we know or should know based on our business, or is common knowledge.

We use this information to decide whether to insure you and on what terms. When giving this information, you are doing so for yourself and anyone else that will be insured under the policy.

If you do not tell us
If you do not comply with your duty, we may reduce or refuse to pay a claim and/or cancel the policy. If you are fraudulent, we may also have the option to treat the policy as if it never operated.

Excess is the amount you may have to pay towards each claim.

  • Basic Excess -
    Applies to all claims. It will be a standard amount. You may also be able to choose a higher amount for a lower premium.
  • Additional Excesses -
    Applies when the car is driven by a person who is not an excluded driver, but who:
    • is under 21 years of age
    • is aged 21 to 24 years inclusive
    • has not held a full Australian licence for at least two years
    • is not listed as a driver on the Insurance Certificate.
  • Reduced Window Glass Excess -
    Applies only if indicated on the Insurance Certificate and allows you to pay an additional fee on your premium to pay a lower excess if it’s only the car's window requiring repair.

No claim discount (NCD)
A no claim discount on Virgin Car Insurance Comprehensive is calculated on your years of driving experience and claims record. As you gain more years of claim-free driving, you get a discount from the full-priced premium until it reaches a maximum discount (also known as Rating 1). You get to Rating 1 because based on your track record we believe you're less likely to make a claim than an inexperienced driver. (Note that when taking out Virgin Car Insurance we may ask for verification of your current no claims discount.)

Permitted use of the car
If the car is used for purposes that you have not declared to us, you will have no cover. Permitted use (selected from the categories below) is shown on your Insurance Certificate.

  • Private Use or Private and Commuting Use -
    For social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. It’s also for travelling between home and a regular place of work.
  • Private and Occasional Business Use -
    As per Private and Commuting use above, plus use for occasional business purposes by the regular driver or spouse only. Occasional Business means the car is not registered for business use and not an essential part of earning income from such business.
  • Private and Business Use -
    As per Private and Commuting use above, plus use for the business of the regular driver or spouse by any driver listed on the current Insurance Certificate. (but no more than 4 employees may be listed)

Use that’s never covered -

  • carrying passengers or other people's goods for payment
  • driving tuition for payment
  • hiring the car to other people.

Use that's always covered -

  • private car sharing and voluntary home or community service, provided that no profit is made.

Personal effects
Personal effects are your personal belongings in your car at the time of an accident. When you take out Virgin Car Insurance Comprehensive we provide cover for damage to your personal effects resulting from an accident involving your car.(Limits do apply. See our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for the full details).

Product Disclosure Statement

These are the standard terms for a scale insurers use to rank your driving history and risk. Rating 1, no claim discount and no claim bonus all refer to a discount applied to the full premium.

Third Party, Fire & Theft cover
Virgin Car Insurance Third Party, Fire & Theft cover gives you protection against damage caused by your vehicle to another’s property plus cover should your car catch fire or if someone steals it.

It's for cars valued at less than $10,000 and offers limited cover if your car is damaged in a no-fault accident by an uninsured vehicle.

You're not covered with Third Party, Fire and Theft insurance if someone damages your car in an attempt to take off with it. Likewise if someone steals items from your car.

Third party property cover
Virgin Car Insurance Third Party Property cover gives you protection against damage that’s been caused by your car to someone else’s property. It also includes limited cover if your car is damaged in a no-fault accident by an uninsured vehicle.
Outside of the limited cover mentioned above, you're not covered with Third Party Property if something happens to your car. Likewise if someone steals items from your car (or steals the car itself) or it catches fire.
