Five! Four! Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!
The big moment is fast approaching, and if you haven’t got your New Year’s campaign locked in yet, now is the time to start planning! Remember, New Year’s Eve comes just once a year, so it’s always worth making it a truly memorable night.
With that in mind, we’ve put together a quick list of some of the very best New Year’s Eve destinations on earth. Perhaps they’ll give you a bit of last minute inspiration, or encourage you to start planning for next year?
Times Square, New York
Times Square in New York City is famous for being a mecca of sound, light and entertainment. Most visitors to the Big Apple make a trip to Times Square an essential part of their itinerary – but did you know the famous intersection on the corner of Broadway and Seventh is also a must-see New Year’s destination?
Every year, an estimated one million people brave the winter cold in order to witness the famous ball drop on the roof of the One Times Square building. Over the last 60 seconds of the year, a massive ball descends down a 43 metre flagpole, climaxing with a flurry of fireworks and music and signalling a new beginning for all!
If you’re looking for a truly memorable New Year’s Eve event, why not take a trip across the globe and find a spot on the River Thames in London, where you’ll have a great view of the massive Big Ben tower! What better way to enjoy New Year’s Eve then by watching the last few seconds tick by on the most famous clock in the world?
Londoners know how to organise a great New Year’s Eve event, and put on a fireworks display to rival Sydney’s famous annual light and sound extravaganza. Around 12,000 different bangers, fizzlers and snapcrackers were used in the 2012/13 display, which ran for a remarkable 11 minutes.
Auckland, New Zealand
If you’re not keen on travelling halfway around the world to welcome in the New Year (or don’t fancy being surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other wild revellers) why not spend a more relaxed New Year’s Eve in the beautiful city of Auckland, New Zealand?
Auckland will be one of the first cities in the world to see in 2014, watching the sun rise a full two hours before Sydney and five hours ahead of Perth. The City of Sails can put on a pretty impressive party as well, but perhaps the best way to spend a Kiwi New Year is on a (relatively) quiet beach with a few loved ones.
Last but not least, the city of lights makes a truly spectacular (and romantic) place to ring in the New Year with someone you care about. The famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées – an impressive street located in the heart of Paris – is a particularly popular gathering point for merrymakers. Just make sure you have a good view of the Eiffel Tower before the clock hits zero!
Afterwards, you can continue the party by visiting one of the many glamorous bars and clubs in the city. The celebrations carry on late into the night and the next day, when the La Grande Parade de Paris brings in the New Year in style.
So there you have it, four incredible New Year’s destinations that sure beat watching the alarm clock tick over with your cats. Wherever you decide to see in 2014, make sure you stay safe on your travels and consider taking out Virgin Travel Insurance.
