FAQs

  • What is combined home and contents insurance?

Home and contents insurance is a type of insurance policy that provides coverage for both the physical structure of your home and the personal belongings inside it. It is designed to protect homeowners against financial loss in the event of damage or destruction to their property from an insured event, as well as theft or damage to personal belongings.

  • What does home and contents insurance cover?

Home and contents insurance covers the structure of your home and your personal belongings at the insured address . It covers the financial loss that may arise from damage or loss of your home and its contents from insured event like a fire, theft and storm.

  • How much is home and contents insurance?

There are lots of factors that can influence your home and/or contents insurance premium, including:

    • Sum insured – generally, the larger the sum, the higher the premium
    • Location – areas prone to severe weather or crime, for example, can attract higher premiums
    • Age and construction materials – the newer your house, for example, the less you’re likely to pay
    • Security features – usually, the more secure your home, the lower your premium
    • Who occupies your home – if you have tenants, you may pay a higher premium
    • Claims history – the more claims you’ve made in the recent past, the higher your premium is likely to be
    • Insurance excess – typically, the higher your excess, the lower your premium; and vice-versa
    • Optional covers – the more optional covers you have, the higher your premium is likely to be
    • Government charges, taxes or levies.
  • Is home and contents insurance compulsory?

Home and contents insurance is not compulsory to have in Australia. There is no law that stipulates that you must have your home and contents insured. However, if you are not covered with home and contents insurance, this means that the responsibility to take on the financial loss of damage to your home will be on you. With home and contents insurance, the physical structure of your home, as well as your belongings will be covered by insurance. Most Australian home mortgage lenders require you to take out home insurance before your loan becomes unconditional.

  • Is it cheaper to get home and contents insurance together?

Generally, bundling home and contents insurance together can be cheaper, as many insurance providers offer discounts for combining policies. For example, at Virgin Money we offer a 30% discount consisting of 15% for combining and 15% for buying online. This discount only applies to your first-year's premium. By purchasing both coverages from the same insurer, you may benefit from lower premiums and simplified policy management.
